Movies about music

I find it hard to express myself in terms of favorites, specially in big categories. A question like "what's your favorite song", or "what's your favorite artist" can leave me paralyzed for minutes on end while I'm trying to figure out the answer, it's such a transcendental question! But today, one second before writing the first word on this post, it so happened that I realized which my favorite type of movie is: the music type. I guess it's not surprising for someone who often tags her posts with #musicismylife.
There's lots of movies about music that I could recommend to you, but as I have been doing lately, I'll limit my suggestions to four, hopefully you will find the time to watch them, enjoyment is guaranteed.
The first one on the list is The Commitments, for some, the best Irish movie of all times. Fun, authentic, honest... I love the last line from Johny "the Lips", when he says that, yeah, the band could have gone on to record, and play and get famous and stuff, but "this way it's poetry" ( you'll have to watch it if you want to know what "this way"means, although you can probably imagine it...).
The second suggestion is Cadillac Records. I hear the script could be more faithful to both the characters and the story, but the music... ah! The music is so good! Beyoncé Knowles's rendition of Etta James's singing is powerful and heartfelt beyond measure, enough on it's own to make the movie enjoyable, but the goodness doesn't end there, there film is filled with blues from beginning to end, not a dull moment for your ears, trust me.
The third one is High Fidelity. There's one line at the beginning that kills me everytime: "Was I miserable because I listened to pop music, or did I listen to pop music because I was miserable?". I still haven't found the answer to that question. Pop music is used in it's widest sense here, which I like, and I also find very interesting the aesthetic appreciation for music that some of the characters share, as opposed to a musician's, which is, to my mind, more scattered.
And finally, one of the funniest movies ever, This is Spinal Tap. It's even better if you have a soft spot for hair metal, like I do, and you can appreciate all the ridiculousness and grandeur that converge in the music style and make it so special.
Well, there you go... there are many more, though... they're all coming to me now! I'll leave them for another occasion.
